Halloween is going to the dogs

The least your dog can do is parade around in public wearing a cardboard cutout of the Starship Enterprise. Zombie Walk is a charity event, and this year your undead pet can help keep other pets alive by donating to Friends for Life, a no-kill shelter in the Heights. Sculptor Alfred Paredes offers an equally eye-popping spectacle as he turns giant pumpkins into elaborate, dog-inspired Halloween sculptures. There will be trick-or-treating for kids and dogs, performances by the Houston Canine Frisbee Disc Club and a caravan of food trucks. The event benefits Citizens for Animal Protection; donations of canned cat food, clay litter, copy paper, paper towels, Clorox and money will be welcomed. In addition to costume contests for large and small dogs, infants, kids, teens and adults also can compete. [...] featured: dancing, fortune tellers, face painting, magicians and at 8 p.m. the movie "Coraline." The costume contest at A Peaceful Pet, 701 Richmond, benefits PugHearts Houston Pug Rescue, but even cats and exotic animals are invited to compete. A random lottery will pick as many as 24 dogs and cats for sterilization by SNAP's Houston Mobile Clinic.
