Letters: Outing dangers, presidential edicts, Roger Clemens

Regarding "2 canoeists drown at church retreat" (Page B1, Monday), how can any group plan such an event involving 60 people, many of them youngsters, without precautionary measures: life jackets, adult overseers who have experience with kayaks, lifeguards and adult monitors constantly on alert? Regarding "Obama issues new guidelines on deportation" (Page A1, June 16), many people are happy that President Obama has made the decision for the new guidelines on deportation. Rather than get Congress to change the tax laws, what if he simply tells the Internal Revenue Service to stop collecting taxes from anyone who earns $1 million or more because it is the right thing to do (from his point of view). Once that door is opened, it will be very tempting to continue issuing edicts for every topic the special interests want changed. [...] public defenders are underpaid, overworked, and every card in the deck is stacked against them. [...] the state has to pay the legal fees for cases it loses, and perhaps more for putting the defendants through unjustified hell, there will be no justice in our justice system and innocent people will suffer for it.
