Homeless man cared for by neighbors dies in fire

[...] it wasn't much of anything, but it's where Otis Davis sought refuge to escape his demons, his life without his beloved wife, who died of cancer many years ago. For the last eight months, the 59-year-old man lived in this shack on a grassy field surrounded by trees in a neighborhood just west of downtown Houston. The shack lacked electricity or water, had no furniture, not even a mattress. Yet a few years ago, 78-year-old Lonnie Houston, recovering from open heart surgery, scraped together all he could to build an 8-by-8-foot room for a homeless man whom he saw shivering and sleeping outdoors without a coat. Houston's daughter, who lives next door to her father, also took on the responsibility of cooking for and feeding Davis. Davis soon became sort of a "village project," someone everyone recognized and greeted as he shuffled down the street holding a flashlight and wearing rubber camouflage boots that someone gave him. The Houston Fire Department arrived on the scene quickly, but Davis never made another sound.
