Through October, Mayor Annise Parker will pose for photos with cats and dogs selected as Pets of the Week from BARC, Houston's animal shelter and adoption program. The challenge is to see which of the competing shelters records the biggest increase in the number of animal lives saved between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31 over the same period last year. While the primary focus during the challenge is on adoptions, BARC also gets credit for saving lives by returning lost pets to their owners or transferring animals to other organizations where adoption is guaranteed, such as a breed rescue group, according to information from the ASPCA. If, or perhaps we should say when, BARC wins the challenge, administrators plan to use the $100,000 prize money toward purchasing a mobile adoption unit, Newport said.
